Investigation of sub - bandgap absorption in iron pyrite : optical and electrical measurements

چکیده
We investigate sub-bandgap absorption in pyrite FeS 2 single-crystals, using both natural and synthetic crystals. Both types of crystals show non-negligible magnitudes of sub-bandgap absorption. To test whether the origin of the residual sub-bandgap absorption is partially due to a lower bulk bandgap than previously thought, we conduct temperature-dependent electrical measurements on natural and synthetic crystals. Unlike previous measurements on pyrite, our electrical measurements are done in a sulfur atmosphere to avoid FeS formation. Using conductivity data in the intrinsic regime along with extrapolated Hall mobility data, the extracted bandgap is more than 0.1 eV lower than the literature value of 0.95 eV. However, higher-temperature Hall data are needed to gain a more reliable bandgap estimate. Thesis Supervisor: Tonio Buonassisi Title: Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering

متن کاملNucleated Growth of Iron Pyrite on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
Iron pyrite, one of the phases in the FeS2 system, is a promising semiconductor for use in solar cell applications due to its earth-abundance, high absorption coefficient, and suitable bandgap. However, currently the efficiency of iron pyrite solar cell device does not exceed 3% [1]. Many studies attempted to understand the cause of the low open-circuit voltage in pyrite devices. Some studies s...
متن کاملEnergy level alignment and sub-bandgap charge generation in polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells.
Using charge modulated electroabsorption spectroscopy (CMEAS), for the first time, the energy level alignment of a polymer:fullerene bulk heterojunction photovoltaic cell is directly measured. The charge-transfer excitons generated by the sub-bandgap optical pumping are coupled with the modulating electric field and introduce subtle changes in optical absorption in the sub-bandgap region. This ...
متن کاملStudy of structural, optical and electrical properties of ZnO/CuO nanocomposites
In this work, the first ZnO/CuO nanocomposites were synthesized by chemical vapour deposition (CVD), thermal evaporation (PVD) and sputtering on silicon substrates (Si). Then, the structural, optical and electrical properties of the samples were investigated. Examination of the X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the mixed-phase formation of hexagonal zinc oxide (ZnO) and monoclinic copper oxi...
